    Teenage pregnancy information campaign

Bromley College tackled the difficult issue of teenage pregnancy with an information campaign aimed at its students entitled ‘Want respect? Use a condom’.

The aim & objectives of the campaign were:
    • To raise awareness of local contraceptive and sexual health services including those offered to students in the College
    • To help build a closer working partnership with outside sexual health agencies
    • To raise awareness of the ‘Want Respect? Use a condom’ campaign and its key messages, specifically for 16 – 18 year olds

A group of seven students (three girls & four boys) were nominated as a peer team group and met with the local teenage pregnancy health improvement officer Jeanne Gregory from the Bromley Community Provider Unit once a week for five weeks.  The training included how to give advice on contraceptives, when distributing condoms and to give guidance on how to avoid sexually transmitted infections.  They all received certificates for this training.

As part of the campaign, a ‘bedroom’ with an inflatable bed was set up in the student common room with covers and pillowcases with the message ‘Want Respect? Use a condom’.  Students were invited to sit on the bed and talk about safe sex maturely and to understand the dangers of sexually transmitted illnesses amongst teenagers.

The peer team gave out free bags containing sweatbands, condom holders and badges to students who had taken part in the campaign.

The highly successful campaign was backed up by a team of professionals who were available to provide more detailed information for the students.
