Key facts:

General information

The Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) and the Professional Certificate in Education (PCE) courses are an in-service qualification for those who already have a teaching position.

They are flexible distance courses designed for practising teachers or training in the Post Compulsory Education and Training sector to who wish to gain a recognised, national teaching qualification. These teacher training qualifications are not for the primary or secondary sector - they are only suitable for those teaching post-16 students.

Students for these courses usually come from a wide range of teaching or training environments, e.g. colleges, Police Force, Local Authority Services, private companies and the health service.

If you already have a degree you will gain the PGCE (Post Graduate Certificate in Education) qualification. If you do not have a degree you will gain the PCE (Professional Certificate in Education) qualification. BOTH programmes are identical and contain the same courses and evidence requirement.

Those who have previous qualifications teaching or recent and relevant experience may be able to claim accreditation of prior learning (APL) thus reducing the number of courses if they are eligible for exemption on some courses.

At interview you will be required to bring along your passport and professional qualification certificates (originals – no photocopies will be accepted) and undertake an initial assessment of your literacy and numeracy skills. Please note that observations will only be carried out at locations within a maximum of one hour’s travelling distance of Bromley College.

It is a requirement of the programme that you obtain a mentor from your setting who is themselves a qualified teacher who has held a PGCE/Cert Ed for a minimum of 3 years.
